As of October 2015 all new lunches will only be posted on Instagram (and shared on Twitter).

A Very Merry BBF Blog Hop AND Well-Read Wednesday

Back again so soon? I feel so honored and loved and holly and jolly and ....
Okay, I'll stop now.

It's double the pleasure and double the fun! Not only is today a super merry Bento Bloggers & Friends blog hop, but today is also the first Well-Read Wednesday here! Each Wednesday that I bother to make myself something to take to work for food, I'll attempt to tie it in to whatever is going on over at The Well-Read Pirate Queen -- my new book blog! Today's the perfect day to start, too, since the last book I read & rambled about just happens to be one of my favorite Christmas books:
In the large section of my EasyLunchbox I have some leftover lasagna on top of California blend vegetables with the cover art out of provolone cheese. The story takes place in a California town and they have a lasagna community dinner so it works well (and is mighty tasty to boot)!

Speaking of boots, in the top right on top of some Cinnamon Apple Straws is Santa ... who's still wearing his boots but kinda got decapitated along the way. (He needed it. Really.) The top left has Cinnamon Apple tea bags .... because I really like it. Almost as much as I really like this book:

Now hop on over to Lunches Fit For A Kid to see what merriment they have going on!
Don't forget to keep hopping until you end up back here
(and then use the links to check out that book blog of mine)!

BBF Holiday Hop : The Penguin Who Wanted to Be Different

John only has a couple more lunches to go before he's off for his holiday break and we're thrilled to be able to share today's for a Bento Bloggers & Friends Blog Hop!

When you're done here, make sure you click on the link at the bottom of the post to keep hopping ... and continue doing that until you end up here again!

At some point last year or the year before John picked out The Penguin Who Wanted To Be Different from his Scholastic book flyer from school.

And we never read it.....
until now!

It's a cute little story about Dorothy the penguin who, well, wanted to be different. She gets a visit from Santa on the night of Christmas Eve and the picture of them walking in the moonlight is what John requested for lunch!
In his PlanetBox Shuttle, the moon is a bologna & cheese sandwich. The "snow" is Pirate booty. Santa and Dorothy are drawn on Empire Jack cheese. Christmas-themed fruit snacks were used for the stars and trees. In the small compartment he has a clementine and a couple of Christmas cookies.

Time Lord Tuesday : Wilf

Dear Santa:

For Christmas this year please give Steven Moffat the overwhelming urge to bring dear Wilfred Mott back into the Doctor's life.

Please please pretty please?

More People Than Could Possibly Be Named

Harry and Ron's Christmas Sweaters in @EasyLunchboxes

John had asked for something entirely different for lunch today, but when I gave up on trying to do that I came up with another idea thanks to a picture I found on Rock Your Ugly Christmas Sweater: Harry Potter and Ron Weasley rocking the Christmas sweaters that Ron's mom made for them their first year at Hogwarts!

Ron & Harry are small bologna & cheese sandwiches on top of holiday tortillas. He also has some strawberry gelatin with peaches and two chocolate frogs. You can't have a Hogwarts Christmas without chocolate frogs, now, can you?

Murder Mystery Monday : Murder Under the Mistletoe (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries)

I absolutely adore Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - a wonderful Australian series that, luckily, is also available on PBS and Netflix! The final episode of the second season was Christmas themed (well, Christmas-in-July themed, anyway): "Murder Under the Mistletoe."  I opted to take the easy-ish way out for tonight's work lunch and rather then draw my beloved Phryne again, I drew her stocking from the mantel:
Packed in my EasyLunchbox, I have leftover eggplant parm with a provolone stocking on top, a couple of clementines, and some mini peanut butter cups.

The Polar Express

It's one of our favorite books AND movies for the holidays and John's having his third lunch based on The Polar Express today!
Packed in his Pottery Barn All-n-One, has has mac & cheese in a tree shaped silicone cup gifted to him by his beloved Aunt Cristi with cheese train and letters on top (we even did a "jump up and down" test to make sure they would all stay put), veggie straws, a clementine, some Christmas-shaped gummies, and Christmas cookies that he helped me make over the weekend to enjoy and share.

The Dinosaur's Night Before Christmas in @EasyLunchboxes

When John was just itty-bitty I bought him The Dinosaur's Night Before Christmas and it's still a favorite! For the first time last night we noticed that in the cover where it shows all of the different types of dinosaurs, it included the little boy's Sockosaurus .... so he became lunch!
In his EasyLunchbox, John has a clementine, peaches in strawberry jello, holiday tortilla chips, pepperoni slices, holiday gummies, and the Sockosaurus drawn on empire jack cheese.

The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas .... Again.

It's the third year that The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas has been in our lives and, as such, the third lunch. The first year the only art was done by decorating a Thermos container. Last year was the dinosaur eating Santa. This year John chose a picture mid-poop with the family dog surfing on a wrapped guitar!
It's a simple little lunch with grapes, fruit snacks, a ham and cheese sandwich and veggie straws. He also has a yogurt tub in his bag.

Time Lord Tuesday : Handles

Tuesdays are being declared "Time Lord Tuesday" in the realm of theme days for my work lunches! After all, I love Doctor Who and I love making Doctor Who lunches.

Tonight I'm revisiting last year's Christmas special, "Time of the Doctor," and the Doctor's longest running companion (300 years, give or take): Handles.

Packed in a Laptop Lunchbox, Handles and his farewell phrase are provolone cheese. They're sitting on top of Philly Cheese Steak & Eggs (recipe HERE). In the top right is banana yogurt (because, still, you always take a banana to a party). The bottom right has my cinnamon apple tea bags (because I didn't want my entire bag smelling like cinnamon and shutting them in here will contain that a bit).

Rise of the Guardians Elf

John read the second story in the Rise of the Guardians mini two-story graphic "novel" on his iPad. John has never been a big fan of comics or graphic novels, but we enjoyed this short one so much that he may have been swayed! The story told about how North (Santa) got his elves. Of course, the main elf had to be lunch!

In his PlanetBox Rover, John has a ham and cheese sandwich, Scrabble Jr Cheez-Its on top of veggie straws, sugar free jello, yogurt raisins, and Wild Winter fruit snacks.

Murder Mystery Monday : Rest You Merry by Charlotte MacLeod (in @EasyLunchboxes)

I was lamenting on the blog's Facebook page about not having any inspiration as of late to make lunch to take to work. I typically just toss some instant oatmeal or a can of soup in my purse and call it a day. SO we brainstormed some "theme days" that might make lunch more fun to make and eat for me. We start today with the first Murder Mystery Monday (thought up by our awesome friend Amy from Yummy Bites By Amy)!

I've been reading Charlotte MacLeod's Rest You Merry, which is the first in her series starring Professor Peter Shandy. He's a snarky piece of work and I love him. The college where he works is one of those where pretty much everyone lives on campus and every year they rake in lots of money with the Grand Illumination festival. Pretty much everyone except for Shandy who refers to the event as the "Annual Fleecing" .... until this year. This year he hired decorators to make his house as bright and loud and obnoxious as he could and then he, himself, escaped on a ship out of Boston called the Singapore Susie. Of course, Shandy ends up back on campus before the festival is done and ... well ... you can read for yourself.

And you should. (It's only $1.99 for Kindle right now and ooooh so worth it!)

I was on a city bus on my way into work when I read this the first time and snorted so loudly that one of my co-riders asked if I was okay.

And now it's lunch.
Packed in one of our EasyLunchboxes, the large section is a mish-mash of grilled chicken, mixed vegetables, pasta and light alfredo sauce. The words and Santa are provolone. I used AmeriColor food gels for the art -- the larger segments with a water color brush; the details with a toothpick. The top right section has some polish sausage chopped up. The top left has some mayo to dunk the sausage into and some Peppermint Andes for a festive little sweet treat.

(You can go see my rambling review of the book at The Well-Read Pirate Queen!)

Judy Moody & Stink : The Holly Joliday in @EasyLunchboxes

We decided to re-read The Holly Joliday so that means, of course, a whole new lunch! Last year he had asked for the cover picture for lunch and this year the title page! I'm wondering what he'll ask for next year from it ...

Judy Moody and her brother, Stink, are drawn on American cheese. I cut the top slice of his bologna sandwich out so it looks like the ornament. He also has grapes, yogurt raisins, Pirate Booty, Mini Slim Jims, a chocolate Santa, a cookie, and his vitamin/Omega-3 gummies are hiding under the cookie. Of course, it's all packed in an Easy Lunchbox.

Many moons ago I first read Mooseltoe to John and made him a lunch.

This week he read it to me ... and I made him another lunch!

I've been dreading the day when I would have to make another Mooseltoe lunch for almost three years because the pictures are pretty complicated. When John asked for the very last page of the book I couldn't have been happier!!!
The sandwich is ham & cheese on wheat and I used a large watercolor brush and food gel to blacken the top slice. The eyes, stars and lights were all cut out of the American cheese (the rest of which is what went inside the sandwich). Ho Ho Ho is spelled out of alphabet cookies and Scrabble Jr CheezIts. He also has Cinnamon Apple Straws, Veggie Straws, grapes, and a small chocolate Santa on top of his vitamin/Omega-3 gummies.

A Toy Christmas

Another day, another Christmas story lunch!

Today it comes from the first story in the Disney Christmas Storybook Collection.

"A Toy Christmas" features the whole gang from Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in a sweet little story about them having to spend Christmas without Andy. Of course, it all worked out in the end with a happy  little holiday ending thanks to all of the toys working together.
For lunch, John picked out Sketch's contribution of being the roaring cozy fire:

In the lunch: half of a ginormous blueberry muffin, yogurt raisins, Sketch drawn on a small block o' cheddar, Mini Slim Jims and a Christmas chocolate under the cheese .... and Pirate Booty in his Toy Story container that he's had since pre-school!

03 December 2014

SpongeBob's Christmas Wish

Today's lunch comes from SpongeBob's Christmas Wish
Last year John had a lunch from the book (Squidward Santa), so this year he wanted something different - the seahorse reindeer from when Sandy's first telling SpongeBob all about Christmas! (or would those be seareaindeer? hmmmmm)
Packed in an EasyLunchbox, John has a bologna and cheese sandwich, white cheddar popcorn, grapes, his vitamin/Omega-3 gummies, and banana yogurt.

Mater Saves Christmas

It was decided yesterday after school that from now until Christmas John will be bypassing his beloved Wednesday pizza days at school in favor of "countdown lunches" (and idea borrowed long ago from KeeleyMcGuire).  We're also bypassing chapter books for his homework reading. Instead, he'll be doing his big pile of Christmas books with lunches for each one! (He does have a couple of unread Christmas-y chapter books, but they're parts of series and, like me, he has issues with skipping around.)

Anyway, the lunch:
in his PlanetBox Shuttle: turkey sandwich on wheat, veggie straws, grapes, Christmas cookies (one to share), vitamin/Omega-3 gummies in Lightning McQueen
The Saturday before Thanksgiving FirstBook and our school district put on a book giveaway for the teachers and students in the district. John brought home a great big wonderful haul since each family was allowed ten books and one of them got turned into the lunch above : Mater Saves Christmas! (He also picked up the Disney Christmas Storybook Collection  which will help with about 18 lunches all on its own!)

01 December 2014

Simple snacky for the first of December

Mini Slim Jims, colby jack cheese stick, Tings, Kisses (in snowflake foil), grapes, granola bar, "Frozen" yogurt cup, and vitamin/Omega-3 gummies in the tree box.

Judy Moody & Jaws

And we're back!!! I guess having almost an entire month off from lunch blogging is all I'm allowed.

This week John started reading the first Judy Moody book. He decided to take a mini-break from Magic Tree House after we finished the eighth book and eeny-meeny-minie-moed good ol' Judy.  He was already aware of who she was thanks to having read some of the books starring her brother, Stink (and having lunches based on them, of course, which you can go back and see HERE). He's already bummed because he currently only has two of her books ... but we'll remedy that at some point, I'm sure.

Anyway, on to the lunch!
Packed in his Laptop Lunch box, Judy and Jaws are drawn on small turkey sandwiches with alphabet cookies spelling out their names. Jaws has a small container of raisins with him since they were closest thing I could think of to the flies and bugs he eats and John was against me putting a hunk of raw hamburger in his lunch. The small containers to the side contain banana yogurt and then veggie straws with cheese cut out to spell "Snap Trap," which is what Judy and Stink say when Jaws is dining.

Magic Tree House # 5 : Night of the Ninjas in @EasyLunchboxes

The original plan was to read the first four MTH books and then take a break with something else.
Plans change, obviously. John is so hooked that even his Sims FreePlay game is made up with MTH characters (and Harry Potter ones, too, of course)!
The ninja master is drawn on colby jack cheese and sits on a Mini Dipper containing mustard for the ham instructions. He also has tortilla chips, yogurt raisins, and his vitamin and Omega-3 gummies.

16 October 2014

Magic Tree House # 4 : Pirates Past Noon in @EasyLunchboxes

Rolled up ham with pirate rings, cheese stick, hard cooked egg with parrot drawn on, grapes, vitamin gummies, Pirate Booty (of course) and a chocolate medallion!

Magic Tree House # 3 : Mummies in the Morning

We had originally intended on holding off until Monday for a Mummies in the Morning lunch even though John finished the book last night .... and then realized that there's no school on Monday and he was planning on getting lunch there every day except for Friday! SOOOOO we put our heads together and tried to figure out how to turn his snacky lunch for today into an MTH lunch.

Thank goodness for hieroglyphs and food markers!

My brilliant boy had the idea of drawing the clues from Queen Hutepi's brother on the mini banana muffins that were already packed in his Planetbox Shuttle! (He also has Mini Slim Jims, veggie straws, yogurt raisins and his vitamin/Omega-3 gummies.)

Next week? Pirates!

08 October 2014

Magic Tree House #2 : The Knight At Dawn

We read the second Magic Tree House book, The Knight At Dawn, over the past two days so tomorrow he asked for another MTH lunch! (AND an MTH-themed birthday party in June!)

Jack & Annie are bologna & cheese sandwiches. He's holding the castle book. She's holding her flashlight. They're standing in front of a cheese castle. He also has SnaPea Crisps with ranch dressing, grapes, and his vitamin/Omega-3 gummies.

Magic Tree House # 1 : Dinosaurs Before Dark

A couple of weekends ago was the annual book sale at my favorite local library. At last year's event I picked up a ton of books for John (of course), including a handful from Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series. They went on his book shelf and sat there. And sat there. And .... yep. Sat there. During this year's half-price sale I was able to pick up a few more and added them to the shelf. He decided that we would finally give them a try during another Harry Potter "intermission."

He loved the first book and I have a feeling we'll be reading a lot more of Jack and Annie's adventures in the not-too-distant future. (And by "loved" I mean REALLY loved to the point where when we took turns reading he would read a chapter and I got to read a page or two before he cut me off and started reading himself again!)

Of course, there must be lunch.

In his EasyLunchbox, John has a bologna & cheese tree house with veggie straws, a Pteranondon drawn onto colby jack cheese atop a small pile of Pringles, and yogurt raisins (which he says are just like dinosaur eggs!).

Some of my friends have also done MTH lunches in the past you should go see:

Kevin the Minion in @EasyLunchboxes

One of John's favorite YouTube channels is, of course, about Minecraft ... with the added bonus of Kevin the Minion from Despicable Me! So, thank you, Thinknoodles for the laughs ... and the insistence that Kevin goes to lunch.
Yes, Kevin is a Twinkie (and BANANA Twinkie, even!) and that's a VERY rare occurrence around here. He will be split in half (at least) and shared with a friend or two at school. Even at home the rare Twinkie is a shared food. He also has banana pudding, some veggie straws, mini Slim Jims, grapes, and minion graham crackers.

25 September 2014

Angry Birds King Pig

Clockwise from top left: yogurt raisins and vitamin/Omega-3 gummies, honey mustard veggie straws, ham pig with colby jack crown, alphabet cookies & Scrabble Jr Cheez-Its, string cheese

Mr Alligator Goes To Lunch

A couple of Christmases ago John given Mr Alligator by one of my best friends and her son ... and he's remained one of John's best friends ever since!
This morning he asked if he could take Mr Alligator to school .... in lunch.
Mr Alligator is drawn on a pumpkin cream cheese sandwich that has one slice of wheat (for the drawing) and one slice of cinnamon raisin bread. He packed the rest of the lunch while I was doing the drawing and he chose carrot sticks with veggie ranch dip, a couple of Mini Slim Jims, yogurt raisins, and his vitamin & Omega 3 gummies.

18 September 2014

John made lunch (more or less)!

Thanks to some extra hours at work a couple of weeks ago I was able to say "yes" when John started pleading with me to get him one of Pottery Barn Teen's All-N-One lunch kits after he saw one that someone else was using. It helped that the pattern he had decided on was on sale, of course.

It arrived Wednesday just before he got off the bus and as soon as he saw it he started deciding what exactly had to go in and where. Basically, he made his lunch! (I just opened packages!)
Clockwise from top left: Vitamin & Omega-3 Gummies, yogurt raisins, veggie straws, leftover boneless garlic parmesan wings with dipping sauce, granola bar

15 September 2014

Tommy & Tuppence for Dame Agatha's birthday!

Today marks the 124th birthday of Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie! I wasn't originally planning on making anything special to take to work tonight, but I couldn't resist celebrating with some Tommy & Tuppence. I've been watching the old episodes on Acorn (and getting giddy about the reboot scheduled for next year to help celebrate her 125th!).
In my Laptop Lunchbox I have chicken thighs with garlic parmesan sauce, provolone Tommy & Tuppence and colby jack letters and heart. In the bottom right is cottage cheese. The bottom left is mixed vegetables with the cheese bits left over from cutting out the letters.

Snickerdoodle Muffins Snacky Lunch

John still loves "snacky" lunches and was thrilled when I came home with packs of mini snickerdoodle and pumpkin muffins the other day. He eeny-meeny-miney-moed the snickerdoodle ones for today's lunch. He also has mini Slim Jims, grapes, veggie straws, his vitamin & Omega 3 gummies, and an unpictured peach yogurt cup.

11 September 2014

Doctor Who : "I Am The Doctor ..."

John's lunch for today came from the most recent episode of Doctor Who, "Robots of Sherwood." I'm not going to worry about those who avoid spoilers since the clip the lunch is from has been made public by the BBC and, really, doesn't give much away:

In his PlanetBox Rover (all decked out in custom DW magnets) he has a small bologna and cheese "Doctor 12" sandwich with a cheese speech bubble and spoon, grapes, Scrabble Jr CheezIts on top of 12 Veggie Straws, Alphabet Cookies with 12 fruit snacks (and his multivitamin gummies), and 12 grapes:

And, of course, he asked me to relabel another bottle! (If the video from Instagram doesn't embed below, you can just click HERE to see it!)

10 September 2014

Plants vs Zombies : Crazy Dave

Today John has Crazy Dave from the Plants vs Zombies games in his PlanetBox Shuttle! Dave is drawn on Empire Jack cheese and his name is cut out of the same. They're sitting on a bed of Doritos with salsa on the side (which is as close as John gets to Dave's beloved tacos). To the left are grapes and pepperoni slices skewered with zombie hand picks. He also has a yogurt cup in his bag along with his sugar-free lemonade.

Minecraft Rap Creeper in a PlanetBox Rover

We're still super-big Minecraft fans here -- even moreso, maybe, since the mega update to Minecraft PE. John's hand-me-down laptop is ancient and "glitchy" so he's spending more and more time on his iPad playing ... and, of course, watching massive amounts of YouTube. In fact, today's lunch combines those two loves into one!

In his PlanetBox Rover:
Empire Jack Cheese Rap Creeper, sausage (split in half so it fits better), grapes, Omega 3 & Multivitamin Gummies, spicy brown mustard for dipping, Veggie Straws & Scrabble Jr CheezIts

His PlanetBox magnets were made using Avery Magnet Sheets.
His bottle is a Fiji water bottle re-labelled with a printed picture & secured with packing tape.

And if you aren't familiar with the Minecraft Rap Creeper, check out this awesome video:

LCHF Cream Cheese Pancake Muffins (& More)

I'm going to be doing a 12 hour shift tonight (for the third night in a row) so I'm going fully prepared to not starve OR be tempted by the food we have at work. With the exception of mayo packets and little tubs of cream cheese there really isn't anything there I should eat. SO I mixed up some super simple Cream Cheese Pancake Muffins and between those,  a couple of hard cooked eggs & some cottage cheese I should be well satisfied when all is said and done!
At the suggestion of someone in the Facebook Group Egg Fast - Stall = Breaker (diet), I used the standard cream cheese pancake recipe in a muffin pan! It's just 4 tablespoons of butter, 4 ounces of cream cheese, 4 eggs, 2 packs Splenda (or Stevia) and some cinnamon. Melt the butter and cream cheese together (about a minute in the microwave), stir in the sweetener and cinnamon, crack the eggs in, beat the bejeepers out of them and pour into a muffin pan! I used a 6 muffin silicone pan that I placed on top of a cookie sheet (for stability) and it took 20 minutes at 325. Easy peasy and absolutely yum!

School Spirit in an EasyLunchbox

John asked to have his school mascot, the coyote, for lunch today! We found lots of pictures but ended up using one from his student handbook as the model for the cheese drawing.
He has the coyote drawn on American cheese, two slices of bologna skewered with yellow and blue star picks (his school colors), Bugles and orange segments. He's also taking his school water bottle.

Packed in:
